Park Sayings and Quotes

Below you will find our collection of inspirational, wise, and humorous old park quotes, park sayings, and park proverbs, collected over the years from a variety of sources.

The world is a playground, and death is the night

Parks and playgrounds are the soul of a city.

Marty Rubin

It is the child in man that is the source of his uniqueness and creativeness, and the playground is the optimal milieu for the unfolding of his capacities and talents.

Eric Hoffer

Make your race a playground, not a proving ground.

Lauren Fleshma

A national park is not a playground. It's a sanctuary for nature and for humans who will accept nature on nature's own terms.

Michael Frome

Behind every great amusement park is a great fan site.

Walt Disney

Preserving parks and open spaces is a winner because it doesn't need to be explained to everyday Americans.

Frank Luntz

The true object of all human life is play. Earth is a task garden; heaven is a playground.

Gilbert K. Chesterton

They say a happy childhood is a lousy preparation for life. Kids who spend their playground days fat, ginger or gay know the truth.

Adam Baker

You never get too old to play.

Going to the playground changes as you grow up, but there's always fun to be had, even if it's just laughing about getting stuck in the baby swing or playing a random game. And like other amusing activities, trips to the playground can usually end up in great photos. The next time you go, see what inspiration you find.

We're not the only ones who think playing is important. There are tons of great quotes on the subject, and many of them just so happy to make perfect Instagram captions. Check them out below.

Just hearing the word “playground” probably has you imagining a boisterous group of kids jostling for position to take another go down a sky-high slide. But over the past decade, cities around the world have been reimagining what a playground can be — and who they can best serve. What they’ve found is that these recreation areas aren’t just child’s play.

While playgrounds for older adults are still a relatively new phenomenon in the U.S., it’s believed that the original concept dates back to 1995, when China opened the first senior-focused outdoor recreation area following the country’s implementation of a national fitness program.

It didn’t take long for the idea to catch on: Japan, Finland, Germany, Austria, England, Scotland, Spain, Canada, and — of course — the U.S. all followed suit.

In Spain in particular, where it’s estimated that 40% of the population will be 65 or older by 2050, adult playgrounds have become a common sight. (Barcelona alone is said to have more than 300 of them.)

Instead of high-flying swings and towering jungle gyms, adult playgrounds are outfitted with low-impact exercise equipment that’s aimed at improving core muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and overall well-being of its users. Much like a gym (minus the monthly membership fees), elliptical trainers, stationary bikes, treadmills, and group classes are common features.

“They focus on promoting balance, flexibility, and range of motion, all of which can help with the functional capabilities of older people and allow them to do more of the things they want to do,” Cedric X. Bryant, president and chief science officer of the American Council on Exercise — a San Diego-based nonprofit that advocates for the importance of physical fitness for all — toldThe Wall Street Journal

At Carbide Park in La Marque, Texas, which opened in 2014, helping aging citizens improve their balance and coordination is the main goal. In order to accomplish that, the city spent $36,000 to install an extensive range of specialized equipment, including fitness steps, a cobweb floor, a wavy balance beam, low chin-up bars, and a stretching board.

“As we get to an aging population — those over 65 — you start looking at some of the major causes for hospitalization,” said Stephen Holmes, Galveston County’s longtime commissioner said of the decision to invest in the wellbeing of the county’s older residents. “Much like you see kids gathering at playgrounds, I’m hoping to see the same thing with seniors here, gathering at playgrounds and creating a social aspect for them.”

While some parks are adults-only, others are multigenerational affairs, allowing a unique opportunity for grandparents to play alongside their grandchildren, but in a way that caters to each age group’s specific needs. The social aspect of these community gathering places is another benefit of these playgrounds, as it gives parkgoers a chance to get out of the house and interact with their neighbors.

“These environments can be highly social,” Colin Milner, CEO of the International Council on Active Aging, toldThe Wall Street Journal. “There’s something positive and invigorating about that, especially if the children have moved away or a spouse has passed on.”

Or if you just need a little me time away from home.

This page links to lists of Fenced Playgrounds and Partially Fenced Playgrounds, organised by location:

It only includes playgrounds that are free to access, and open to the public. We haven’t chosen to include playgrounds provided for customers of cafés or restaurants (unless you can access still them when the cafés or restaurants are closed).

The authors of Kiwi Play Safe haven’t haven’t visited all of the playgrounds on the lists, but in many cases quotes about specific playgrounds have been provided by the parents or caregivers who have nominated them. When the authors have been to the playgrounds, they’ve sometimes included their own comments.

Being on a fenced or partially-fenced playground list doesn’t necessarily mean that a playground is going to provide a great play experience for your children. There isn’t widespread analysis of the quality of the play equipment provided – in most cases, Kiwi playgrounds are excellent!

A few things to note about these playgrounds:

Fenced Playground is one that is fully and securely fenced, as far as we are aware. This means that the playground is surrounded by a fence that can’t be climbed by a typical child under the age of five, and has gates that close securely and can’t typically be opened by young children.

Partially Fenced Playground is typically fenced on two or three sides. In many cases the parents who have nominated these playgrounds believe that they should be fully fenced, and where appropriate we’ve noted the information they’ve provided about the nearby hazards. A typical example of a Partially Fenced Playground is a beach playground that is fenced towards the road, but open towards the beach. These playgrounds can be a good choice if you want a reasonably safe place for your children to play, but might not be suitable if you have determined runners, or if you have any mobility issues that could make it difficult to chase down a young child.

Although Fenced and Partially Fenced Playgrounds might be reasonably expected to provide some degree of safety and security, the authors accept no liability for playgrounds on these lists that do not live up to expectations – but if you do visit one of these playgrounds and discover that the fencing is damaged, inadequate, or significantly different to what our information has suggested, please use the Contact page to give your feedback.

Finally, please remember that parents and caregivers who take their children to any Fenced Playgrounds or Partially Fenced Playgrounds must still provide suitable care and supervision at all times.

If you know of a Fenced Playground or Partially Fenced Playground that hasn’t been mentioned, please use the Contact page to submit the details, or get in touch via Facebook.
